Every homeowner reaches this question eventually, usually while standing in a hot house next to a technician they met twenty minutes ago. Here are four tests you can apply yourself, so the decision does not depend on trusting a stranger's judgment under pressure.
Multiply the age of the system in years by the quoted repair cost. If the result exceeds the cost of a new system, replacement is generally the better financial move. A common simpler version: if the repair costs more than a third of replacement and the unit is past ten years, lean toward replacing.
These are heuristics, not laws. A twelve-year-old system that needs a capacitor should get the capacitor. A seven-year-old system that needs a compressor deserves a harder look, especially if it is still under manufacturer parts warranty.
Check the data plate on your outdoor unit. If it says R-22, that changes the math significantly. R-22 was phased out of production and its price has risen sharply. Any repair that requires recharging an R-22 system carries a refrigerant cost that a modern R-410A or R-454B system does not.
An R-22 system with a refrigerant leak is usually a replacement candidate regardless of age, because you will be paying premium prices for a refrigerant that is only getting scarcer.
One repair is a repair. Three repairs in two seasons is a pattern. When multiple independent components start failing on the same system, it usually means the equipment has reached the stage where heat, vibration, and electrical stress are catching up with everything at once.
Write down what you have spent on the system in the last three years. If that number is already approaching a meaningful fraction of replacement cost and the failures are accelerating, the system is telling you something.
This one gets ignored and it should not. If your house has never cooled evenly, if humidity stays high, if some rooms are unusable in August, a repair will not fix any of that. Those are sizing, airflow, and distribution problems.
Replacement is an opportunity to correct them, but only if the contractor actually runs a load calculation and addresses the ductwork. A new system installed with the same wrong size and the same leaking ducts reproduces the same discomfort with a newer badge on it. Plenty of situations land in between. In those cases, get both numbers in writing, ask what warranty each option carries, and ask what the realistic remaining life of the repaired system is. Then take it home and think about it. A quote that expires overnight is a sales tactic, not a business necessity.
One additional consideration specific to Texas: our cooling season is long enough that efficiency differences show up meaningfully on the bill. Moving from an old, degraded system to a modern high-efficiency unit produces a bigger annual saving here than it would in a milder climate. That does not automatically justify replacement, but it belongs in the calculation.
