What AC Repair Actually Costs in Texas (And What Drives the Price)

Your blower is running. Air is coming out of the vents. None of it is cold. This is the single most common call we take between May and September, and the good news is that the cause is usually one of nine things, most of them inexpensive.
Here is the order a technician actually works through, and what each finding means for your wallet.
This is the number one cause of no-cooling calls in Texas, by a wide margin. The run capacitor is a small cylinder that gives the compressor and condenser fan the electrical kick they need to start. Heat degrades it. When it weakens, the outdoor unit hums but the compressor will not engage, so the indoor blower keeps circulating uncooled air.
You can often spot it: the top of the capacitor bulges or the sides look swollen. A technician confirms it with a meter, comparing actual microfarads against the rating printed on the label. Refrigerant is not consumed. A sealed system does not use it up the way a car uses oil. If the charge is low, there is a leak, and adding refrigerant without finding that leak is throwing money into the air. Common leak points are the evaporator coil, the service valves, the line set where it passes through a wall, and brazed joints that were poorly made during installation.
Low charge shows up as weak cooling first, then a frozen evaporator coil, then a compressor working itself to death. Proper repair means locating the leak with electronic detection or dye, repairing it, pulling a vacuum, and weighing in a fresh charge.
The outdoor unit rejects heat through its coil fins. In Texas that coil accumulates grass clippings, cottonwood, dryer lint, dust, and pollen until it is effectively a blanket. The system cannot dump heat, head pressure climbs, and cooling capacity falls off a cliff. Severe cases trip the high-pressure safety and shut the compressor down entirely.
This one is partly preventable at home: keep two feet of clearance around the unit, and rinse the fins gently with a garden hose from the inside out a couple of times each summer. Do not use a pressure washer, which bends fins flat and makes the problem permanent.
Ice on the indoor coil or on the copper suction line means the coil got too cold, which happens when airflow across it is restricted or the refrigerant charge is low. A clogged filter is the most common cause. So is a dirty blower wheel, closed supply registers, or a collapsed flex duct.
Switch the system to fan-only to thaw it, and do not run the compressor while it is iced. Liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor is what turns a filter problem into a compressor replacement. More detail in our guide on frozen AC coils.
The contactor is the relay that sends power to the compressor and condenser fan. Its contact points arc every time it closes, and over thousands of cycles they pit, corrode, or weld. A pitted contactor delivers inconsistent voltage. A welded one leaves the unit running when it should be off. Ants also love contactors and get crushed inside them, which is a genuinely common failure in Texas.
If the compressor is running but the outdoor fan is not spinning, the unit will build heat and shut down on the high-pressure switch within minutes. You can hear this: a hum from the unit with no fan movement. Sometimes it is the capacitor feeding the fan; sometimes it is the motor bearings. Either way, shut the system off, because running a compressor with no condenser airflow does real damage.
A thermostat with dying batteries, a loose C-wire, or a scrambled configuration after a remodel will run the fan without calling for cooling. This is easy to isolate at the air handler, and it is worth checking before assuming the worst about the outdoor equipment.
Most systems have two circuits: one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser. If only the condenser breaker trips, the blower keeps running and blows room-temperature air, which is exactly the symptom you are experiencing. Similarly, a condensate float switch that trips on a blocked drain line cuts the cooling call while leaving the fan alive.
Reset a breaker once. If it trips again, stop and call. Repeated trips mean a short or a locked-rotor compressor, and resetting into a fault is dangerous.
This is the expensive one. A compressor that has seized, gone to ground, or lost its windings usually means a decision point rather than a simple repair, particularly on a system past ten years old.
