Frozen AC Coil: Why It Happens and Why You Should Shut the System Off

Ice on an air conditioner in the middle of a Texas summer looks absurd, and homeowners often assume it means the system is working extra hard. It means the opposite. A frozen coil is a system in distress, and running it that way is how a modest repair becomes a compressor replacement.

Why a coil freezes at all

The evaporator coil gets cold because liquid refrigerant boils inside it, absorbing heat from the air passing over it. That process depends on a balance: enough warm air moving across the coil, and the correct amount of refrigerant inside it.

Break either side of that balance and the coil surface drops below 32 degrees. Moisture condensing on it freezes instead of draining away. The ice insulates the coil, which makes it colder still, and the problem accelerates until the coil is a solid block.

Cause 1: restricted airflow

This accounts for most frozen coils we see. Less warm air across the coil means less heat available to boil the refrigerant, so the coil runs colder than designed.

  • Dirty air filter. The most common cause by a wide margin.
  • Dirty blower wheel. Dust accumulates on the fan blades and destroys its ability to move air. Invisible without pulling the blower.
  • Closed or blocked registers. Closing vents in unused rooms reduces total system airflow.
  • Crushed or collapsed flex duct. Common in attics.
  • Undersized return ductwork. A design issue rather than a maintenance issue.
  • Dirty evaporator coil. The coil itself can clog with dust, which restricts the air passing through it.
  • Overly restrictive filters. High-MERV filters on systems not designed for them.

Cause 2: low refrigerant charge

Less refrigerant in the coil means lower pressure, and lower pressure means a lower boiling point. The coil gets colder than it should and ice forms.

The important thing to understand is that low charge always means a leak. Refrigerant is not consumed. If a technician adds refrigerant and does not find the leak, you will be back in the same position within a season, having paid for refrigerant that is now in the atmosphere.

Cause 3: mechanical and control problems

  • Failing blower motor. A motor running at reduced speed moves less air.
  • Failed metering device. A stuck TXV or blocked orifice disrupts refrigerant flow.
  • Running the AC when it is too cold outside. Below roughly 60 degrees, head pressure drops enough to freeze the coil. This is why running the AC on a cool night to fix a stuffy room sometimes backfires.
  • Incorrect blower speed setting. Sometimes left wrong after an installation or a repair.

What to do right now

  1. Turn the cooling off at the thermostat. Set the system to OFF, and set the fan to ON. Circulating room-temperature air over the coil thaws it far faster than leaving everything off.
  2. Wait. A lightly frosted coil clears in an hour or two. A solid block can take a full day. Do not chip at it or apply heat; you will puncture the coil.
  3. Watch the drain pan. A significant amount of water is about to melt. Make sure the condensate drain is clear or you will trade a frozen coil for a water-damaged ceiling.
  4. Replace the filter. Do it while the system is thawing.
  5. Open all supply registers and clear anything blocking the return grille.
  6. Restart and observe. If it freezes again within a day, the cause is not the filter and you need a technician.

Why running it frozen is genuinely damaging

The compressor is designed to compress vapor, not liquid. When the evaporator coil is iced, refrigerant does not fully boil off inside it, and liquid refrigerant returns down the suction line to the compressor. Liquid does not compress. The result is called slugging, and it damages valves, washes lubricating oil out of the bearings, and can crack internal components.

Preventing it

  • Check filters monthly during cooling season.
  • Keep supply registers open, all of them.

  • Insist on leak detection rather than repeated refrigerant top-offs.
  • Do not run cooling when outdoor temperatures drop below about 60 degrees.
